High School student, Hans Banerjee, son of our EO/ECE faculty member, Partha Banerjee, presents a research paper at Spring APS meeting.

CENTERVILLE — A Centerville High School senior made a foray into a summer work program and emerged as the main author of a scientific paper.
Hans Banerjee, 17, presented the research paper, of which he was first author, to the American Physical Society on March 18 in Portland, Ore. The paper focuses on optical properties of photorefractive crystals, which are electro-optic materials that can be used in specialized scientific, industrial and defense applications.

The harmony of art and science: droplet holography

Little drops of water Little grains of sand Make the mighty ocean And the beauteous land….
so wrote Mrs. J.A. Carney in 1845. Artists like Martin Waugh have wonderful pictures of water drops (and ice crystals) exhibited as liquid sculptures (see, for instance,
http://www.liquidsculpture.com/fine_art/). A picture, however, is only two-dimensional. At the University of Dayton (UD), researchers are looking into the detailed nature of these little drops, using holography to recreate their exact three-dimensional shape in order to understand how exactly they deform when they impact fast moving surfaces such as the windshields of aircraft traveling through rain.

The third International Conference of Nanophotonics in Harbin, China

The EO program successfully organized the third International Conference of Nanophotonics in Harbin, China. This is one of the topical conference sponsored by the Optical Society of America. Prof. Qiwen Zhan served as the conference co-chairs, along with Prof. Qihuang Gong from Peking University and Prof. Xiudong Sun from Harbin Institute of Technology. Prof. Joseph Haus served as the technical committee co-chair. Prof. Haus and Prof. Zhan also gave a short course on "Nanophotonics" at the conference. The next conference will be held from May 31-June 3, 2010 in Tsukuba, Japan.
